Well hey there, Scotland.
So. I made it! Very eventful 24 hours. I left MSP on the 3rd at 3:10 pm Minnesota time, and arrived in Amsterdam on the 4th at 5:45 am Denmark time. SO boring. I watched two movies during the flight, both of which were boring and long. It was a pitiful attempt at getting myself to sleep during the flight, but that was so not going to happen. So I soldiered through and chatted with my seatmate, a junior at St. Olaf named Olivia who was traveling to Greece. Once I got to Amsterdam, it finally hit me that I was in a foreign country once I saw this:
I watched the sun rise through the window of the terminal. Finally, at 9 am, we boarded the plane to Glasgow. It was a very quick flight, only about an hour and a half. And the plane wasn't even close to full, so I got to be a seat hog (oink oink) and stretch out over the three seats. When we touched down, I had to go through customs and immigration, which was essentially a little old lady with a Scottish accent grilling me about my plans for the semester. I then picked up my bags, grabbed an airport taxi and hauled my tired butt to campus. I picked up my keys and checked out the flat. One of my roommates, Sarah, was already there. She is also an international student. She's visiting from Australia. We tramped around town for a while, getting lunch, some groceries and checking out some shops. However, because I was so damn tired and sick, we had to stop after a while. The weather was HORRID. Steady rain, very windy and very cold. Lovely buildings, though!
That's the art gallery right down the street from my flat! I finally met my other roommates later in the afternoon. I'll be living with a Scot, an Austrian, an Australian and another American. And get this... he's from Minnesota! What are the odds? After finally dragging myself out of the rain and cold, I showered (sweeeeet shower. It has a continuous heating system, which means I'll never run out of hot water!) and chatted with the Scot (Bradley) and the Australian (Sarah). We talked for over 2 hours! It was really fun to get different perspectives on all sorts of things, like history and politics. I can already tell it's going to be a lot of fun to have this group around. And Bradley has been living in Glasgow for a while now so he knows the scene. We are already planning to go to a comedy club next week and some pubs over the weekend. I can't wait!
